When we think about our careers, we often fixate on the idea of continuing our current position for as long as possible. However, do you often catch yourself wondering what it would be like working in a different company? Does the thought of being in the same career for a year (or more) make you feel stuck or slightly desperate? If that’s the case, you have to make a decision, to stay unhappy or to find a new opportunity.

You’ve probably heard that a lot of people go through their entire lives without ever leaving their original work environment. But according to research conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), 62% of Americans will change jobs at least once during their working years—and that includes those who stay at their current jobs for more than a decade! You might think that moving on would be worse than staying where you’ve already built your career path on. In truth, there is an endless sea of opportunities in need of a candidate with your potential and talent. 

Looking for a New Job isn’t easy, but it can be done. Being hesitant is normal as this requires a lot of time and contemplating before reaching a finality. However, here are some of the signs that you really should be looking for a new job.

1.) Poor Financial or Promotional Opportunities

While it can be tempting to keep working hard as long as possible in hopes of finally earning a raise or promotion, this approach rarely works out. You may end up leaving money on the table by waiting too long or accepting a job with fewer benefits than you deserve.

It’s important to remember that the salary you earn today should be enough to support a lifestyle that doesn’t have to be grand yet comfortable, while being able to maintain savings that’ll help plan for your financial future. If your compensation package can’t meet both of those, start weighing the pros and cons of staying in a position that can’t support your basic needs. Reaching a stagnant point where there’s no chance of you going any higher, pay or position wise

A job that makes you feel miserable and undervalued does not only affect your emotional, mental and physical health, but your relationship with others and how you view life in general. A study published in 2013 examined the connection between mental health and physical pain, and found that “work-related stress was more strongly correlated with chronic pain than any other factor.” You may not notice it, how many times have you declined the chance to hang out with your family and friends because you’ve been overwhelmed with the stress of dealing with your job? 

Taking care of both your emotional and physical well-being is your priority. Listen to your body and learn how to tell when something feels off.  If you feel less anxious after work, or have been suffering from frequent headaches or low self-esteem, it’ll probably cost more to stay where you are in the long run than losing your job.

3.) You’re usually unmotivated.

When you start a job, you might be excited to try something new. That excitement can fade after a while, but it’s the emotion-related motivations that keep you going. As time passes, you may feel burnt out from doing the same thing over and over again in spite of your  This can result in you procrastinating tasks that you used to love doing or accomplish immediately.

Motivation is about more than just being productive at work; it’s about having a sense of purpose behind what you do every day.

We all have different interests and passions that drive us to do things. If you’re in a job that doesn’t allow you to use your creativity or produce innovative things that solve someone else’s problems, then it may be time for a change.

A job that allows you to make a real impact is one that pays competitively for your expertise and experience. When you have the freedom to do what you love and feel like it has real value, then it will motivate you to keep working.

4.) No Chance of Personal Advancement

When you’re a working professional, it’s important to make sure your job is in line with your values and goals. In order to succeed, your goal must be geared toward personal advancement. If you’re not growing at work, you’re not thriving—and you probably aren’t going to succeed. 

There could be various factors associated with that. You may be getting too familiar with the tasks that you work on autopilot. When you aren’t learning new skills or wasting your potential to lead and try something new, it’s worth taking some time to figure out why this is happening—because there are ways to make sure that what you’re doing is actually helping you reach your goals rather than holding them back.

TLDR: When work doesn’t enable you to make use of your talents to work, it no longer in line with your career goals. You won’t thrive, so do yourself a favor and start looking.

Job searching is a huge effort. It’s an absolute time sink of research and prepping and doing interviews. But landing the right job is key to living happily and meaningfully. Always be looking for better and take it when it’s offered. Experience and all that jazz are supposed to be the stepping stones to greater success. So if a better opportunity presents itself then it’s time to take it.
